the true function of school is to prepare your mentality to tackle problem not the knowledge itself. most of school knowledge would be obsolete in real life. but your ethics, how to cope with authority, how you connect your problem with known solution, how you take example and implement in your problem etc etc. but nowadays people only care about grade.

I never memorized stuff through school, I only tried to understand it. Maybe that's why you struggle. If you memorize 2+2=4, then you won't know 2+3. You'll need to memorize everything and that's sure to be a pain.

Learning to work hard and follow directions is more important than raw IQ. Having both can lead to very successful people, but lazy people with high IQ rarely succeed and are often bitter little people. I've had 2 patients who were members of MENSA (joining Mensa is kind of absurd to me but let's not go there) One was 40 and living with his elderly parents and unemployed. The other had never held a job longer than 2 years because she always wanted to recreate the wheel everywhere she went, and was highly critical of those already there. However she could never follow through and have success with her plans (in part because her hubris caused her to miss the wisdom in the way things were being done).

School (and university) is about 1. proofing, that you can do your homework and 2. make you familiar with the topic. Intelligence is most likely not affected by formal education, so if you just wanted to test it, would a 2-hour test once a year suffice.

Memory is tied to the dreaded Bell Curve. So you can say a person with a higher IQ has a better memory than a person with a lower IQ, subsequently they take less time to learn and less repetitions to remember. Checkmate. Memorizing things literally measures how smart you are.

How can you be smart if you don't remember anything? And can you understand that being smart doesn't make you automatically knowledgeable, skilled of methodic about any topic? School is sometimes too old school and some teachers are still living in the 1970's when it comes to pedagogy. But still, smart doesn't get you that far in life...

School is just about teaching you basics, at a certain point things are not useful for your future (at least if you dont want to study math). For that I did not see why I have to learn them, cause they are not of any use for me. You could see that in my grades, some were pretty good, others really bad. Today I am doing a job with full passion and I am very good at it. Got to go, someone ordered another Big Mac :)

But you are not smart either OP. I don't think any member using this website is any kind of super genius. Most are average, below average, less ambitious . Most of us have superficial knowledge about almost everything. That's it. And these are the kinda of people that need schooling. Normal memory building schooling to become a cog in the system. Until your gears are worn out you keep on working 9-5 (if you are lucky), work till you are old, probably become a manager level employee and retire; dies at the age of 65 because of your unhealthy lifestyle.
